Austin singer-songwriter Charlie Mars was born in El Dorado, Ark., and raised in Laurel, Miss., where he went from listening to Methodist music to ’70s singer-songwriters to R.E.M., the Smiths and the Pixies. While attending Southern Methodist University, he recorded his first album, and his fanbase steadily grew. Moving to Atlanta, then to Athens, Ga., two more albums followed. And so did a bout in rehab and a trip to Sweden, where Mars picked up his pen again and rediscovered his muse. When he returned stateside, he won big at a casino and recorded the songs that got him a record deal with V2. His self-titled 2004 album put his career into overdrive—until the label folded. That’s when he headed for Austin, hooked up with some of the city’s best—and producer Billy Harvey—and recorded 2009’s lauded Like a Bird, Like a Plane. In some circles, Mars is also known as Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker’s boyfriend. Or vice-versa.
